VAT Refund

The sales tax of VAT in Greece is currently at 24%.


You are eligible for a VAT Refund before leaving Greece if you meet all the following requirements:

  • Be a resident of a non-EU country at time of purchase 
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Items purchased must be retail purchases of a tourist nature.
  • Total amount per receipt must be greater than EUR 50. Must be brought in the same shop, on the same day. At point of claiming Tax Refund, refundable goods must be unused. 
  • Your must have all the forms and documents required: 
    • A Completed Tax-Free Form
    • Original receipts of the goods purchased 
    • The goods purchased
    • Passport
    • Your flight boarding pass or e-ticket


Procedure of VAT Refund

  1. Shop at a store that offers tax-free shopping (Look out for the Tax-Free Shopping sticker).
  2. Obtain your VAT refund form. 
    • If you are at the shopping boutique, your sales associate will have it prepared for you when you pay. 
    • If you are shopping at a large shopping centre, this is usually obtained from a special VAT refund counter within the building. 
  3. Before boarding on your day of departure, proceed to the Customs office in Athens International Airport with the forms, your passport or ID document, the goods purchased and your boarding pass or e-ticket. You will find the customs office located opposite Check-in Counter No. 61 (Public Access). 
  4. Get your VAT Refund form stamped and proceed to a Tax Refund facility/counter with your tax invoice to receive the refund in cash or to your respective credit/ bank card. 
  5. Claim in person by showing your passport, boarding pass and original invoices to the Tax Refund assistant on the day of departure more than 30 minutes before departure at the airport.
